Nomad is the East Bay's hip, new, community-based, earth-friendly arts and internet cafe. Many evenings (and a few afternoons) bring live music, poetry, storytelling and open mic performances to the Nomad stage. Come see local artists' work on display, or watch them in action painting the "community canvas" that occupies the stage wall. Our "Kids' Corner" is a favorite among parents seeking a coffee break while their children build Lego towers or read picture books, lounging on colorful pillows and a soft, hand-woven rug (nomadic Gabbeh, naturally). The Nomad features indoor and outdoor seating. Premises are wheelchair-accessible. We serve 100% certified Fair Trade organic coffees and organic teas in a warm, friendly and comfortable environment. We also offer freshly-grilled sandwiches and other delicacies from both sides of the Mediterranean, delicious pastries baked fresh daily, and locally-produced vegan cookies. We support local shelters and food charities with our remaindered foods. We are vocal supporters of sustainable farming. Our commitment to Fair Trade provides sustainable living wages for farmers, and helps foster the creation of a healthier planet. For more information and a list of businesses that serve 100% certified Fair Trade products, please visit: www.transfairusa.org Nomad Cafe is proud to be a 2004 and 2005 winner of the State of California Integrated Waste Management Board's Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) awards. Out of 1403 statewide award recipients for 2004, Nomad was designated as one of only ten "WRAP of the Year" designees. At Nomad Cafe we feel very strongly about the environment. We believe that as residents of a global community, we have an obligation to responsible stewardship. We are an officially certified "Green" business through the County of Alameda's Green Business program. We have implemented measures to conserve energy, water, and materials and to cut pollution (view our utility usage). We use safe, biodegradable cleaning products that are mixed using an enclosed system which protects employees from spills and splashes and cuts the chances of a spill to the City's storm drain system. We engage in active recycling. 95% of the waste produced at the café is compostable, and is recycled through a local food waste recycling program, or directly to our customers. Our building is an all-new construction that makes use of the latest energy-efficient and earth-friendly technology, including low-volume, on-demand tankless hot water heaters, hydronic heating systems, and recycled hardwoods. For more info on the Alameda County Green Business Program, please visit: www.greenbiz.ca.gov We feature high-speed internet access using state-of-the-art 802.11g wireless technology. Bring your wi-fi laptop to enjoy our commercial upload and download speeds, or just plug in to one of our ports from any table. If you don't have a laptop, come enjoy our slick new bank of high-rise space age full-service workstations! The recent emergence of this affiliation of arts venues in the South Berkeley/North Oakland neighborhoods surrounding Ashby BART station has finally given a name to an area long known for its proliferation of artists, writers, musicians, dancers, actors and other performers, as well as residents who appreciate community-based arts. The formation of the Ashby Arts District was spearheaded by Epic Arts, which serves as its fulcrum. The partnership includes La Peña Cultural Center, Epic Arts, The Shotgun Players at The Ashby Stage, The Black Repertory Group, Nomad Cafe, Northern California Land Trust, Unconditional Theater and the Triptych Gallery. This district is unique in that it has been organized by artists and arts organizations from the grassroots up, and is now supported by the local business community, neighborhood associations, and was officially recognized by the Berkeley Mayor's office in the summer of 2003. Through collaborative events and programs, the District's members are working to bridge gaps between neighboring organizations, increase public awareness of the arts, and unify the communities we serve. Our undertakings include: publishing a monthly arts calendar that reflects events and performances throughout the Ashby Arts District; compiling and sharing a database of nearly one thousand local artists, musicians and other performers in order to allow broad saturation of favorite acts within the district; and working with city officials to move new arts organizations into the area. In addition, a street festival is in the offing for the summer of 2005, during which a section of the north Shattuck corridor will be shut down to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of La Peña and the Northern California Land Trust, the development of the Ashby Arts District, and the creation of a better world through art, one thriving community at a time.
